ARtiSt's StAteMeNT
I believe as an artist I am ever-evolving. My inspiration comes from things naturally occurring around me, places I visit, music and people I interact with. I am not tied to any one subject matter, medium or idea of what my art should be. The thing I enjoy most about art is the endless experimentation. The process makes art a problem solving venture with every new project. I believe the process of making art is just as valuable as the end result.
When classifying the type of work I create, I would say most of my pieces are organic in nature. In some cases, I like to contain these forms in a literal or implied structural form. This stems from my view of mankind and our need to contain things that don’t belong to us. Nature is a fine example of this. The raw colors of my work allude to the creation and destruction of the world; the erosion of self, body and soul.
I have been influenced more by outstanding professors and mentors than by artists I have never met. These professors have taught me that creativity is the future. However, there are of course, artists that I admire. Martin Johnson Heade, Roy Lichtenstien and Nils-Udo are some of the diverse few.
My goals for the future as an artist are to continue learning and experiencing new techniques and also to build on my knowledge of art history and processes. While I already use recycled pieces in my work, I hope to incorporate more “green” pieces in the future. I believe this will benefit my own artwork and the children whom I instruct and inspire.
